E-Liquid—also known as vape juice, e-juice, or vape liquid—is the flavoured mixture used in vapes. This liquid is heated up by the coil inside your vape’s pod or tank and converted into vapour, which you then inhale.
There are several different types of vape juice, each designed to suit a specific type of vape kit or vaping style.
E-liquids are typically made of a maximum of 4 ingredients, though some e-liquids—like shortfills and 100% VG e-liquids—have even fewer ingredients.
Vegetable Glycerine
VG is a colourless, odourless, plant-based substance that’s thicker than PG and creates big clouds of vapour.
Propylene Glycol
PG is a colourless, odourless flavour carrier that’s used to thin E-Liquids and provides a nice throat hit.
Flavourings
Food-grade flavourings are added to e-liquids to add taste and can be either natural or artificial in origin.
Nicotine
Nicotine helps satisfy your cravings while you’re quitting smoking. Some e-liquids, like shortfills, are nicotine-free.
Each class of vape juice is designed to be used in specific types of vape kits. Different e-liquid types generally contain varying ratios of PG and VG, which dictate the types of devices they can be used with. Some e-liquid types contain nicotine while others don’t, and some use different types of nicotine.
High-PG e-liquids—made with a PG ratio of 50% or more—are used in low-powered pod vapes, starter kits, and vape pens. These liquids are typically higher in nicotine, sharper on the throat, and thinner than their high-VG counterparts.
Nicotine Salts
Nic salts are the preferred choice for new vapers switching from cigarettes. They’re made with a special “nicotine “salt” formulation which delivers nicotine to the bloodstream in seconds, satisfying cravings fast while also providing a smooth throat hit similar to cigarettes not matter which nicotine strength you choose.
Freebase 50/50 E-Liquids
Freebase 10ml e-liquids are made with traditional “freebase” nicotine derived from the tobacco plant, which takes a bit longer than nic salts do to “kick in.” Freebase liquids are available in a wider variety of nicotine strengths and have been used in e-liquids since the dawn of vaping.
High-VG e-liquids (vape juice with 60% or more VG) are reserved for higher-powered sub-ohm vape kits, mods, and tanks. This thicker juice is sold in large, nicotine-free bottles, with space in the bottle for you to add nicotine shots, if you want to.
Shortfills
Shortfills come nicotine-free in large bottles, with enough space inside for you to add 1 or 2 nicotine shots. The VG ratio ensures big clouds and plenty of flavour. They’re not recommended for new vapers as they require high-powered hardware and because the maximum strength you can achieve with nicotine shots is 3mg.
100% VG E-Liquids
For vapers with an intolerance, sensitivity, or allergy to propylene glycol (PG), 100% VG e-liquids are the #1 choice. They’re less flavourful due to the absence of PG but offer a more natural sweetness. Like other shortfills, the bottles have space for nicotine shots allowing for up to a 3mg strength.
Some vape juices don’t fall into either the high-PG or high-VG categories.
Longfills
Longfill e-liquids, also known as flavour concentrate, come with just the flavouring included, allowing you to tailor your VG/PG ratio and nicotine strength to suit your needs. These DIY e-liquids are great for vapers who want to personalise their juice. The bottles are partially filled, allowing you to add a base mixture and nicotine shots as desired. They’re not designed to be vaped on their own.
Nicotine Shots
Nicotine shots are sold in 10ml bottles and are usually either unflavoured or have an added ice or menthol flavour. These liquids are designed to be mixed into shortfills and longfills and are not meant to be vaped on their own. They’re available in various VG/PG ratios, from 50/50 to 100% VG, allowing you to tailor the ratio of your e-liquid and personalise the finished product.
Each class of vape juice is designed to be used in specific types of vape kits. Different e-liquid types generally contain varying ratios of PG and VG, which dictate the types of devices they can be used with. Some e-liquid types contain nicotine while others don’t, and some use different types of nicotine.
Nicotine salts are created by adding one of several acids (usually benzoic or salicylic acid) to the nicotine molecule, which lowers the pH of the nicotine, allowing it to be more readily absorbed by the body.
Plus, it allows for a smooth throat hit regardless of the nicotine strength, whereas freebase nicotine tends to be increasingly harsher on the throat as you go up in strength.
Nic salts are the preferred option for those quitting smoking because it makes getting your nicotine fix faster, easier, and more satisfying on the throat.
Freebase nicotine is the traditional form used in vaping, extracted from the tobacco leaf. However, freebase nicotine isn’t as readily absorbed through vaping as it is from cigarettes, though you will notice a very similar throat hit as you inhale.
The higher the nicotine strength you choose, the more you’ll feel it on your throat. Thankfully, freebase nicotine comes in a wider variety of nicotine strengths—unlike nic salts.
Freebase nicotine is the preferred choice for shortfill vapers using nic shots, as it provides a strong throat hit even at strengths as low as 3mg.
To figure out which e-liquid type to get, consider your vape kit. Different types of vape kits require different PG/VG ratios to work properly. If you’re unsure what’s compatible with your specific kit, check the product description or user manual.
Because pod vapes and starter kits are typically low-powered and have smaller, high-resistance coils, these vapes are better suited to thinner e-liquids. Ensure that you get vape juice with a 50/50 ratio of VG and PG, which includes nic salts, freebase 10ml liquids, and 50/50 shortfills.
Sub-ohm vapes are higher-powered and have low-resistance coils, so they require a thicker e-liquid to function properly and prevent leakage. You should opt for vape juice with at least 70% VG or more, which includes most shortfills and 100% VG e-liquids.
Disposable vapes and prefilled pods cannot be refilled. For prefilled pods, simply replace the pod when its empty. For disposable vapes, please recycle them when empty. Do not attempt to pry open these devices to refill them.
Here in the UK, all 10ml bottles of vape juice come pre-mixed with nicotine and can be vaped straight away, as-is.
They’re available in different VG/PG ratios (though most are 50/50), with thousands of flavours and nicotine strength options available. Each 10ml e-liquid can fully refill your pod or tank up to 5 times, and with our multi-buy offers, you can get more of what you love for less.
These vape juices are often referred to as TPD e-liquids. This is because the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) of the EU and the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) in the UK have strict rules and regulations about the production and sale of nicotine e-liquids.
For example, the reason why shortfills are nicotine-free is because under the TPD, e-liquids containing nicotine can be sold in a maximum bottle size of 10ml, while nicotine-free e-liquids can be any volume. In addition, the TPD and TRPR rules state that the maximum allowed nicotine strength is 20mg/ml, which is why 20mg (or 2% nicotine) is the maximum legal nicotine strength.
These regulations, while restrictive and onerous at times, require that all vape juices have clear warnings and ingredients lists and ensure the safety and quality of all e-liquids sold here in the UK.
You’ll be pleased to know that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking cigarettes. As long as you’re buying your e-liquids from a trusted, reputable retailer (like us), you can rest assured that your vaping habit is substantially safer than the smoking habit you had before.
Everyone will have different nicotine tolerances and preferences, but generally speaking, you should base your nicotine strength on how many cigarettes per day you smoke (or used to smoke, if you’ve recently quit). If you never smoked, you shouldn’t vape, as vaping isn’t risk-free for non-smokers.
If you are or were a heavy smoker (of more than 10 cigarettes per day), you should opt for a high nicotine strength. For nic salts, try a 20mg or 10mg nic strength, and for freebase e-liquids, try something between 12mg and 18mg.
Moderate smokers should consider a mid-range nicotine strength, like 10mg for nic salts or 6mg for freebase e-liquids. Light or casual smokers should opt for lower nicotine strengths like 5mg for nic salts or 3mg for freebase e-liquids.
You can, of course, opt to go nicotine-free, but if you’ve recently quit smoking, we don’t recommend this lest you return to smoking. Not getting enough nicotine when you first vaping won’t satisfy your cravings, so we recommend shooting high at the beginning and weaning yourself down over time as your nicotine dependence starts to wane.
Absolutely! Got a flavour you love that could use a bit of a minty kick? Want to try a fruity medley no manufacturer has made before? Fancy a 15mg strength when only 10mg and 20mg are available in your favourite flavour? You can mix different e-liquids together to get the juice you want and have fun doing it.
A word of caution, though: be careful to ensure that the liquids you’re mixing have the same PG/VG ratio—otherwise, your final product may not be compatible with your vape kit. Mixing two different 50/50 e-liquids together is no problem, but adding a 50/50 liquid into a 70% VG shortfill bottle will disturb the ratio in the shortfill, which may make the liquid too thin for your sub-ohm vape. If you plan to combine different PG/VG ratios, you’ll have to do the maths yourself.

You can keep your e-liquids fresh even beyond their expiry date by keeping them sealed in a cool, dark spot out of direct sunlight. When you leave your vape juice bottle open, in direct sunlight, or in high temperatures, the liquid will oxidise. While oxidation isn’t harmful, per se, it will cause the nicotine to degrade and may muddy the flavour. Oxidised e-liquids may turn a dark brown colour and may become thicker, which may make them harder to vape.
